Some cars are more than just a means of transport; they’re dream machines. For me, that car was always the E90 M3. This model was the poster on my wall growing up—a naturally aspirated V8, manual transmission, and the aggressive yet refined styling that set it apart. When I was 23, I finally had the chance to make this dream a reality, buying my E90 M3 from a single-owner lady in Sydney. She’d kept the car meticulously maintained, with only fluid changes, so it was essentially a blank slate, and I knew I had something special in my hands.

Driving it back from Sydney to Melbourne solo was a memory I won’t forget—a raw experience of just me, the car, and the open road. Since then, I’ve turned this M3 into what I believe is the ultimate one-car solution: a daily driver that’s also track-ready and doesn’t need a trailer or extra gear to make it perform. It’s perfect for mountain runs, shines at car shows, and, while it’s not as fast as my turbocharged 335i, the high-revving, naturally aspirated V8 delivering power up to 8600 RPM is a thrill like no other.

Building the E90 M3: Engine and Drivetrain Enhancements

Knowing the S65 V8’s potential and quirks, I focused on reliability and performance upgrades. The first stop was tackling the rod bearings with upgraded BE Rod Bearings and ARP rod bolts for peace of mind, followed by replacing OEM engine mounts and addressing all the necessary gaskets, including the rocker cover and timing case cover.

Upgrading to the Akrapovic catless X-pipe exhaust was a no-brainer—it gave the M3 a raw, aggressive tone that lets the V8 roar without restrictions. I added an ESS engine tune and a DCT GTS flash tune, giving it smoother shifts and more responsive power delivery. I also fitted upgraded throttle actuators to ensure long-term reliability, which helped keep this high-revving beast in peak condition. These mods give the car the perfect blend of reliability and performance, making it feel equally at home on city streets or on the track.

Dialing in Handling and Braking

For suspension, I wanted a setup that could handle both track conditions and daily driving. After careful consideration, I went with the ST Suspension XTA coilovers, known for their versatility and durability. Paired with CMP roll center shims and SuperPro adjustable swaybar links, the setup gives me excellent handling feedback without compromising ride comfort.

To keep things under control at speed, I fitted HEL braided brake lines and paired them with Ferodo DS2500 pads. This combination provides the stopping power I need on the track and performs well for spirited mountain runs. And since track days bring out the wear on wheels and tires, I’ve kept a variety of setups: from Rays Volks TE37SLs wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s for daily use to Yokohama AD09 or Bridgestone RE71RS.

Refining the Aesthetic: Bodywork and Interior Upgrades

I’ve always believed that aesthetics should enhance functionality. For the M3, I kept the OEM look but added a few subtle touches, like the carbon GT4 front splitter and mirror caps, giving it an edge without overdoing it. I went for the OEM LCI tail lights for a cleaner, more modern look, and even gave the car a GTechniq CSL ceramic coating to keep the paint pristine.

Inside, it was all about creating a driver-focused environment. I replaced the steering wheel with an OEM M Performance wheel, complete with carbon fiber trim and magnetic shifters from JQWerks, enhancing both style and functionality. Other details like the Alcantara interior trim set, wireless charging unit, and F80-style CarPlay screen bring modern tech into this classic M3, making it the perfect daily driver.

Living the Dream with the Perfect Balance

Owning and building this E90 M3 has been more than just about modifications; it’s about creating a car that represents my passion for driving. This M3 is more than a car; it’s my childhood dream brought to life. It’s got the balance of power, handling, and aesthetic appeal that makes it suitable for any occasion—whether I’m heading to the mountains, a track day, or a car show.

Every time I start that high-revving V8, it’s a reminder of the journey, the countless hours of work, and the thrill of the drive. There’s a unique satisfaction in creating a car that truly reflects who you are, and for me, this E90 M3 does just that.
